Barbara Nanning

Inspiration
Nature is Barbara Nanning's most important source of inspiration: plants, leaves, roots, wind and water.
The oeuvre is a continuum of objects that can be classified into groups, like species and families. Her new objects follow from the preceding ones. Ideas often have an effect over a longer period of time, but never in a strictly linear way.
In her work, Nanning strives for a perfect finish and leaves out anything that is not essential. She aims for a balance between the static and the dynamic, between inner and outer forms, between growth and gravity.

Ceramics
During this exhibition, Nanning will be showing new ceramic objects, which differ entirely from her previous work.
Her earlier works distinguished themselves among other things by their soft, velvet skins and monochrome colours. The skins were created by a process of applying layer over layer of finely grained sand mixed with pigments.
Nanning's new work shows a more recognizable ceramic skin and is multi-coloured. During the "European Ceramic Context 2006" on the island of Bornholm (Denmark), her work received an "Honourable Mention".

Glass
Venini, the renowned art glass-makers from Murano near Venice, have invited B.N. to be the guest designer for their three lines: design, chandeliers and art objects. This is an great honour as well as a challenge.

For the Design line, the vase and bowl shape were retained as the basis shape and the austere mould-blown vases were created in the Bicolor shades: white, grey, blue or green. In addition,
Nanning also created mould-blown objects with more complex shapes, in contrast to the Design line. These shapes undergo numerous processes, such as the application of decorations, whereby she seeks to find a balance between decoration and shape. Like in her other work, here too colour plays an important role.
To achieve these results, she developed a labour-intensive process whereby the decorations are built up using multiple layers of coloured glass.
